Persephone: Rossetti Tribute by Athansor Persephone: Rossetti Tribute by Athansor
This image is part of my long-term "Visions" project: an ongoing exploration of images inspired by Victorian classicism and the pre-Raphaelites; poetry, fairy tales, folk lore and fantasy. It is a tribute to Dante Gabriel Rossetti's "Persephone", and features the lovely :iconcinniuint: as the young woman forced to six months of each year as Queen of the Underworld, because she ate six (or one or four, depending on the version of the story you read--I live in Boston, where winter is most DEFINITELY six months long!) pomegranate seeds while there.

In Rossetti's version, I've always assumed that she's already eaten the seeds...in my version, I'm not sure if she has, and has just found out what this has doomed her to--or if she is starving, and is being pressed to eat some of the tempting fruit in her hand, and all around her. Either way, I loved the way *Cinniuint captured the mental anguish of hapless young woman.

This shoot was my second shoot with someone I've met on dA. I stumbled on *Cinniuint about a year ago, and was very taken with her pre-Raphaelite looks, and instantly imagined her in any one of a number of famous Rossetti paintings. I saw that she was from Holland, but jokingly wrote her that if she was ever in Boston, she should pose for me...and would you believe it? It turned out that she had plans to visit Boston this winter!

She brought along her own costume (a beautiful green elven gown) and her own seamstress (the talented and charming :iconnightshade13:, and we met for an all-day shoot, on, appropriately enough, the last day of the year. I had picked up 7ish yards of fabric I thought would make a good gown,a couple of days before--and with the *fabulous* help of *nightshade13, we fashioned a creditable pre-Raphaelite gown by dint of a lot of draping and a whole lot of safety pins. A week later, I continue to be quite chuffed with the results! :)

I have several painterly versions of this image, as well--but I haven't yet managed to figure out which version I like best, so for now, you'll have to make do with the straight image. Enjoy! :)

Have really been getting into Rossetti's art lately. I blame a BBC series called Desperate Romantics about the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. LOL. But have been really enjoying reacquainting myself with one of my favorite artists. And wanted to say I really like this tribute painting! ;) Saw it in my favorites & laughed since it was right on top & I haven't been to this site in about 2 years!

As for me, it beautifully epitomises autumn, with all shades of reddish, ginger and brown, and those fruit as well :-)

I LOVE that poem and accompanying painting by D.G. Rossetti, and I was absolutely amazed at how you captured the emotions in the painting! My favourite poem and painting by Pre-Raphaelites! Awesome...I can't get over how well you managed to capture the attitude of Jane Morris who was the model for the painting. Cheers!

It LOOKS like a labor of love...the collections are marvelously sensitive and rich... That's one of my favorite things about dA...the way so many marvelous artists go out of their way to share the things that THEY love with their viewers...it's a great way to broaden horizons--and up the ante for everyone concerned! ;)

Yes, I have to admit that some of the work is so good it actually depresses me, lol; it raises the bar of what I expect from my own work.

Hehe--yeah, me too. I sometimes see all the talent here and feel miserably depressed--like there's no way I'll EVER be THAT good...but at other times, I'm elated, and challenged and inspired. And I DO love that feeling! :)

I agree...there are so many sides to this story, that there are any number of directions you can go with it. In this case, the model was simply perfect for showing the character's distress and indecision...it's always lovely, when you work with someone who understands your concept so well--magic happens! :)

I looked at Rossetti's 1874 painting titled Persephona and I think you did a better job of capturing the emotion of Proserpine's plight. Well done.

Hold on to your socks--because I've got four comments to respond to from you--and they're ALL over a year old, but much too nice to not respond to! :)

You just bowled me over with this comment...because, well, Rossetti's painting is so perfectly marvelous! His is, however, much more internalized and brooding, whereas I was sort of focusing on the moment *before*--the hesitation, the doubt... I always find that "what if" moment more interesting than the reaction, after the fact, so many of my works deal with that.

But I'm rambling--I really just wanted to thank you for the kind and thought-provoking comment! :D
