*sigh...*

Journal Entry: Tue Feb 12, 2008, 8:09 PM
I'm feeling rather blue this evening. :(

There's an author--never mind who--it's not really germane--whose books I have collected for 16 years. An author who, I might add, is rather prolific--and steadily releases two, sometimes even three books a year.

A few years back, she got so popular, that her books started being released in hardback (UGH!!!) a year before they were released in paperback...which has meant I've wound up always being a year behind her newest releases, since I REFUSE to buy, or even read, modern hardbacks. (Too big--too hard to hold, and usually the paper feels icky. I HATE reading a book with icky paper! :P)

Anyhoo--one of her hardbacks was coming out in paperback this month, and I've been all excited about it--even to the point of rereading a good 20 or my favorite of her books in the last few of weeks, to "get in the mood" for this one. Heck, I spent two hours this weekend rearranging my bookshelves, just so I'd have room for her latest book--as she'd overflowed her area--and I was starting to stack her books on top of her books..

So tonight...I headed to the bookstore after work--to renew my Barnes and Noble membership, and purchase her latest. I got out of work late--around 8--but that still gave me plenty of time to finish the book up before bedtime, and I was eagerly anticipating devouring it--starting with the ride home, on the T. (Oh, who am I kidding? Starting with standing in line to PAY for the silly thing! ;))

But alas! When I got to the bookstore, I discovered that the book had been published in a "premium edition"--which is *like* a standard paperback, but about an inch and a half taller, with wider spaces between the lines. It's bigger. Bulkier. Top heavy--longer, and thinner than a normal paperback. Does not fit neatly in a coat pocket. Does not fit in a small purse. It does not tuck comfortably under my arm, when I'm juggling lots of things...nor does it fit in the "small" pocket in my backpack--the place where I keep things I need to be able to reach in a hurry--like books, and cash. It doesn't match the rest of my paperbacks...and won't fit on the bookshelves I had designed with paperbacks in mind--it's too tall. And while it will fit in a "normal" bookshelf, it's a weird size, and means you can't stack books on top of the other books--because it sticks out.

Oh yeah, and it's $2 more than a regular paperback.

I bought one a couple of years ago, when I was simply desperate for a book, and another of my favorite authors had a new one out, in that edition. ("Specially made, to be easier to read!", read the blurb on the book!) I didn't like the looks of it, but I WAS desperate--and I bought it anyway.

And have regretted it ever since. It sits on in a place of disgrace, on one of the bookshelves in my bathroom (doesn't everyone have bookshelves in their bathroom?!), and I feel rather disgruntled, every time I see it.

So no WAY was I buying another one.

I bought a new Anne McCaffrey, instead. Or rather Todd McCaffrey--but you know what I mean. (If you're in the know, that is! ;))

And the new Pern book is okay...but I'm oh-so-sad to be missing out on this new book...and am even sadder, because it's entirely possible that this might be the new trend for this author--and that means I won't be buying her (new) books anymore...and finding new authors I enjoy isn't easy, these days!

I've written to the author...and I'm trying to locate an email or physical address for the publisher, to write to them, as well, but I doubt it'll make a difference. Still--if you aren't part of the solution, then you're part of the problem, right? And they DID bring back Classic Coke, when the public protested--so maybe it *will* make a difference....maybe.

But for now, I'm just...sad. :(

(However, I just opened my email...and I see :iconkayceeus: has sent me an ecard--so I'm pretty sure that will perk me up a bit! :D)

EDIT: Yeah, I was right. The card from *kayceeus perked me right up. She always knows how to make me laugh--and she didn't even know I was feeling blue this evening! How's THAT, for timing??! :D

The taller mass markets are a trend that the authors have nothing to do with. I'd contact the publisher, but in the meantime, try to find an "import" version. If you can tell me the book, I can see what I can find for you. (Remember, I work and B&N) ;)

I pretty much assumed it wasn't an author's choice thing--but I figured I'd write to the author on the off-chance that she has SOME kind of input into the decision. That, and the fact that although Penguin has a "Contact Us" page, it fails to give you anything other than a phone number, for contacting them. And I don't WANT to talk to someone--I want to send a letter--because letters have more weight to 'em...and this is something that REALLY matters to me. I LIKE small paperbacks--they're awesome! (They always make me think of Wemmick, in "Great Expectations", and his obsession with "portable property". They're the ULTIMATE portable property! :D)

The book is Jayne Anne Krentz' "White Lies". (And no, I don't read other romance novelists...but she's awesome. Always fun. Predictable--but fun. I don't feel all icky and gross, after reading her stuff.) (And yes, intellectually, I think it's perfectly fine to read romance novels...but emotionally...well, that's another story. And don't get me started on how disgruntled I am with the covers they've been putting on her books the last few years! I'm book snob--and I do NOT like reading books that have trashy looking covers...but I enjoy her enough that I tolerate it. I just have to carry around Dickens or Austen or "Man's Search for Meaning" for a week or so afterwards, just to feel okay about myself again. ;))

If you can find something--I'd be most appreciative--because I don't give up on an author easily--but a book I can't comfortably carry around with me is just not something I can live with. :(

Oh bummer :(
I'm sorry that were let down like that. You're so particular with your book shelves, I can see why it would be that much more disappointing.
They did that with The Dark Tower series, but Chris likes them better because they come with pages of really weird drawings and paintings of events in the story. He needs books with pictures, of course

I'm sorry this has you so upset. I feel your pain. I can't stand the funny sizes of books. As a writer, I cringe at the thought of any of MY books looking so out of place like that. And I can't agree more about the hardbacks, way too difficult to juggle, too tough to hold for hours of reading.

I hope you're feeling chipper again soon!

By the way, I also have a bookshelf in my bathroom! Right next to my bath tub as a matter of fact =D

 You've just painted the most MARVELOUS picture in my mind, for me! :D I can just see Chris, with his picture books!

I don't mind coffee table type books being oversized...or technical manuals...but I love to reread books--and generally carry two with me, everywhere I go, so I have another one to start on, when I finish the first one. (When I DON'T do this, I've been known to finish the one I have...and turn right around, and start reading it again! :P)

Although I wouldn't LIKE it, at least I can see a reason for making a book bigger, if they're going to illustrate it, or something...but to just make it bigger for the sake of being bigger--that's annoying. Just charge me the two extra bucks, and give me my compact paperback back! *grumble grumble grumble*

Hehe--I'm so pleased to find others who grok the whole "books have to match" thing! :D I'm obsessive about my books--I like them to match...and they have to be arranged properly. A great deal of planning goes in to where each shelf of books goes--the antiques, of course, go in the livingroom...and they all go nicely together, because a large proportion of them are all by the same authors--you know--in those compact hardbacks they used to publish. (I can live with them--at least they're easy to carry! :)) Then poetry goes together...poetry books never line up, even when by the same author, but there's a certain charm to poetry books all doing their own thing--it seems rather...poetic. ;)

Then there are fairytale shelves...and children's book shelves...science fantasy...linguistics...drama...all grouped together by category, then a carefullly aesthetically put together blend of "by author, chronological order and size". When something messes that up--it's very distressing! :(

And good on you, for the bookshelf in the bathroom! :D Mine is also next to the tub--and it's full of children's classics (Betsy, Tacy and Tib; LM Montgomery; Alcott; Eleanor Porter; Rosamund du Jardin and Johanna Spyri; the "Pansy" books) and other classics--my Dickens, Jane Austen...perfect bathtime reading! :D)

One day, I'd like to have an entire wall of books, in a large, handsome, well-appointed bathroom, with a raised tub. Wouldn't that be heaven?! :D

I feel your pain hun . . I have it too. for so many years, I have detested the new trend in publishing . . those "tween" sizes drive me to distraction. (I too tend to stack!) all of my hardbound books share a low shelf . . sort of the disgraced section. ;) those were bought for me by well-meaning relations who know of my adoration for the written word. *sighs* you just can't take those blasted things with you on a leisurely walk to the park! those rarely ever become my friends . . the closest they get is casual acquaintance.

yay! nice to know I am not alone in the bathroom book section. lol. and your idea of heaven sounds divine!! will have to incorporate that into my dream house plans. ;) right up there with the circular library!

oh . . and a side note. publishers, the larger ones, never listen. not to their authors, not to their purchasers, not to their investors . . . just to themselves and their pocketbooks. it is a sad thing . . . everything in our country does not need to be super-sized. bigger is rarely ever better.

Oh, I've already got the incredible bathroom with the massive raised tub and shelves and "bath time" reading all set up. I even have a huge mirror wall on one end and a large picture window on the side of it. It's pure heaven. I read and soak every night. It's my quiet time just before I start working. I work at night after everyone has gone to bed and my house is quiet. I'm a grumpy artist/writer, lol, don't like distractions.

Now I need to work on the rest of the house. I'm jealous. Sounds like you've got a wonderful area for all your books. I have only two big book shelves that are packed full, and SO many more books that need a special home. *sigh* all in due time I guess. I've got my eye on some lovely matching Amish bookshelves.... all I need now is too much money!

I know exactly what you mean about bookshelves. I just got my first bookcase, organized the shelf height just so...but I have enough oddly-shaped books that there's a LOT of wasted space - and thus an entire box of books I can't put away. *grumbles* I want a bookshelf in my bathroom though - that sounds fantastic!

McCaffrey novels are wonderful - I need to get into the Pern series again. :D

As to new authors...hmm. I'd recommend Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series. The first is called "Wizard's First Rule". They're a bit difficult to read with sometimes heavy subject matter, but utterly fascinating. I love them. :D :bulletblue:

LOL...don't ya just hate it when they do stuff like that??? it's like when record companies put out CD's in odd shaped boxes (like garbage's cd in a rose shaped box, or radiohead's cd in a book.....they just don't fit properly on the shelves.....perhaps if you look online, you'll be able to find the book in a better format......but in the meantime, you'll just have to borrow it from the library, that way even though it's the wrong size to be carrying around with you, you can at least still read it and then not have to worry about the space it takes on your shelf!
